A Paramount chief is another name for KING. At the time of Paramount Chief Palepoi and Sipusi Mauga's rule, the United States of America was leasing land on the Samoan Islands thus the name American Samoas. The Mauga's still rule along side American officials in Samoa as Paramounts and High Chiefs.
This painting of my great grandfather was nationally recognized on a tour from Samoa to many universities and Smithsonians. I wish I ahd a better copy.
